How to Add Links and Share Stories or Add Context

You sit down to write. You know what you want to work on. And then suddenly you’re checking your phone, making tea, rereading the same paragraph, or wondering why writing feels so much harder than it did yesterday.

If you’ve ever wondered how to get into a flow state when writing, it helps to understand that flow isn’t something you can force. It’s part of a cycle, and what happens before and after a focused writing session can affect how easily you find that rhythm again.

In this workshop, book coach and writer Natalie Polson explains the brain science behind creative flow and turns it into practical ideas writers can use in their own writing practice. She also makes an important point: you do not need to be in flow to produce good writing. Flow can make writing feel easier and more enjoyable, but it isn’t a requirement for getting good work onto the page.

Why Is It So Hard to Get Into a Writing Flow?

Sometimes the problem isn’t a lack of discipline or motivation. Distractions, unclear goals, overwhelm, perfectionism, stress, exhaustion, and even taking on work that feels too easy can make deep focus harder to reach.

Natalie walks you through the four stages of the flow cycle and helps you recognize what may be interrupting yours. You’ll also explore the conditions that can make flow more likely, including clear writing goals, fewer distractions, writing rituals, novelty, the right level of challenge, and genuine recovery after focused work.

Rather than giving you one “perfect” writing routine to follow, this workshop will help you start building a personal flow toolkit based on your own motivation, habits, writing life, and circumstances.

Watch the video if you want to understand what helps you find flow more often, what may be getting in the way, and how to make sitting down to write feel a little less like wrestling your own brain.
