Can you feel the energy shifting online? It’s significant and deep. And it’s an opportunity.
Something is happening and I’ve been feeling it for a while. I’m sure you have too. In this world of Google and Facebook and privacy concerns, the European Union (EU) has a taken an important step in protecting your personal data as you browse and buy online.
I’m sure you’ve noticed your inbox lighting up with notices of updates to privacy policies. This is a good thing.
Here’s what my inbox looked like just yesterday:
What’s all the hullabaloo you ask?
The EU passed a law that becomes enforceable on May 25. It’s called GPDR (General Data Protection Regulation). In it’s simplest terms, it means website owners need to be a lot more transparent in how they collect and process personal information like names and email addresses for individuals who live in the EU.
I’m taking this as a message from the universe that it’s time I get much more strategic about the kind of information I send you in newsletters.
I like visiting your inbox from time to time (if you’re already on my list, you’ll know by now that I’m not a spammer — it’s likely no more than twice a month, less if I’m in heavy introvert mode!) so I’m taking this opportunity today to let you know about the kinds of data I keep. (Like using my newsletter provider, Mailchimp, who keep your name and email safe and secure so no spammers will get your email).
Here’s the bottom line:
- If at any time you want to unsubscribe from emails from me, you can do so by clicking unsubscribe at the bottom of any newsletter.
- In case you’re curious (or from the EU), I’ve updated my privacy notice to explain exactly how I use any information you share with me. You can read it here.
- I will continue to show up in your inbox from time to time with blog posts or tutorials or opportunities that I believe are valuable. I won’t just create a newsletter because I think you need to hear from me. My goal is to honestly provide actionable and helpful content for you.
- A few weeks ago I did some market research and discovered that so many of you would like access to tutorials, training, and a community where you can ask your questions about building a business online in a safe, unassuming environment. I’m thrilled to introduce to The Clarity Collective – a closed and safe Facebook community hosted by me to support you. Ask to join…I’d love to have you!
